Technology is a great topic to discuss in class, but most lessons on technology just approach it from predictable angles…cellphones, the internet, yadda, yadda, yadda. I try to broach the topic from a less obvious perspective.

Take drones from instance. Most students don’t realize that drones have been around for a long time. The only thing that has changed is what modern day drones are capable of. So I usually start with a very, very brief (no more than about 3min) history of drones and see what the students know about modern day drones. This is especially helpful for IELTS students. Technology and its role in society is a very common topic on the IETLS test. It’s a good way to introduce debate in the class room, or a discussion about the moral (if any) limitations we should put on the advancement of technology.
